The invention relates to the technical fields of surface engineering and laser processing, in particular to a composite method for forming gradient nanostructures by laser-assisted mechanical shot peening. A continuous laser beam is used to locally heat the surface of the metal workpiece to the dynamic recrystallization temperature range, while maintaining the dynamic recrystallization temperature range, the mechanical shot peening process is used to strengthen the metal work in a large area, thereby obtaining a deeper gradient nano-structure layer and a better nano-scale to sub-micron gradient structure layer on the metal work surface.
